Sore throat

Sore throats are very common and usually nothing to worry about. They are usually the result of viruses and normally get better by themselves within a week.

Sometimes a sore throat could be a sign of a bacterial infection like tonsillitis or strep throat, and require antibiotics.

If you're concerned about a sore throat, whether your own or your childs, book a free Pharmacy First consultation with an NHS pharmacist below who will be able to advise on treatment of symptoms and prescribe antibiotics if necessary.

Typical symptoms of a sore throat:

  • A painful throat, especially when swallowing
  • A dry, scratchy throat
  • Redness in the back of your mouth or on your tonsils
  • Bad breath
  • A cough
  • Swollen neck glands that may be sore to touch

Follow these simple steps to get your medication quickly and easily

  1. Review the symptoms
  2. Complete the form
  3. Choose a time for our pharmacists to call; where they will determine the best treatment for you
  4. Review your medication in your basket and order for prompt delivery

How will the pharmacist help with your sore throat

In your consultation your pharmacist will assess your symptoms to make a diagnosis and determine the right course of action, which may include antibiotics that they will prescribe for you. You can also ask the pharmacist about ways of relieving the pain and discomfort of a sore throat, such as:

  • Painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen
  • Other medications such as lozenges throat spray containing a local anaesthetic, antiseptic, or anti-inflammatory properties
